چکیده
Two earthquakes struck the NW region of Albanian territory on 21 September 2019 (Mw = 5.6) and 26 November 6.4). The epicenters seismic activity were located offshore Durrës, one Albania’s most populated cities, 30 km from capital Tirana. Various aftershocks followed subsequently. While there no reported injuries, a number buildings sustained significant damage near epicenter following initial event. Subsequently, during second event, was loss life extensive to civilian structures, resulting in multiple collapses. This study focuses earthquake damages observed residential public earthquake-affected region. predominantly affected low-rise masonry buildings, while newly constructed RC structures built according latest rules almost unaffected. commonly encountered building typologies region, together with photos showing amount destruction are presented here. As by authors reconnaissance visit stricken area, examples various patterns presented, along technically substantiated description reasons for those damages. Although modern recent show acceptable performance, detailed surveys Durrës Earthquakes showed that is still an important level deficiency current conventional methods materials. problem may reoccur future hit other rural regions Albania, which must be focused systematically future.

Forecasting earthquakes and earthquake risk
This paper reviews issues, models, and methodologies arising out of the problems of predicting earthquakes and forecasting earthquake risk. The emphasis is on statistical methods which attempt to quantify the probability of an earthquake occurring within specified time, space, and magnitude windows. One recurring theme is that such probabilities are best developed from models which specify a ti...
متن کاملStructural Engineering Forensic Evaluation of Misdiagnosed Concrete Masonry Wall Cracking
Given that concrete masonry walls are expected to experience shrinkage combined with thermal expansion and contraction, and in some cases even carbonation, throughout their service life, cracking is to be expected. However, after concrete masonry walls have been placed into service, originally anticipated and accounted for cracking is often misdiagnosed as a structural defect. Such misdiagnoses...
متن کاملHow Fast is Rupture during an Earthquake ? New Insights from the 1999 Turkey Earthquakes
We report that during the two devastating 1999 earthquakes in Turkey, rupture propagated over a large part of the nearly 200km long fault zone at supershear speed approaching 5km/s. We present observations and modeling which confirm the original inference of supershear rupture during the Izmit earthquake and we show that supershear upture also occurred during the Diizce earthquake. We show that...
متن کاملAn Analysis of the Repeated Financial Earthquakes
Since the seismic behavior of the earth’s energy (which follows from the power law distribution) can be similarly seen in the energy realized by the stock markets, in this paper we consider a statistical study for comparing the financial crises and the earthquakes. For this end, the TP statistic, proposed by Pisarenko and et al. (2004), is employed for estimating the critical point or the lower...
